If I were to ask you what your business networking abilities are like, what would your answer be?
Or do you even like to network?
When it comes to networking, the message is loud and clear. If you want to be successful, you need to spend time networking. But, if you’re an introvert, the thought of having to go to events, as much as you like to get out every now and then, is a lot easier said than done.
Professional networking is an exercise in confidence, especially for people who are shy or introverted.
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone – Business Networking Matters
Do you make a genuine effort to step out of your comfort zone?
Well, that’s part of why so many people avoid it – It is not comfortable for most people!
There are many business networking events that you can attend these days that are vastly different from the ‘general’ networking event.
Networking has evolved a lot since having to give your ‘elevator pitch’ and going around taking business cards from everyone you met (you know what I’m talking about).
Networking is an extremely important tool for anyone seeking to start, keep, grow, or scale their business.
So, here is the key to successful networking…
Anticipate absolutely nothing in return.
” Networking is not gathering contacts, it’s about planting relationships.” ~ Sarah Tony
Be open, and let discussions go in whatever direction they go. This will lead you to attract the
right individuals and opportunities that will be the most advantageous to you in the long run.
If you head out there believing you are just going to talk business, and you’re going to push what
you need to sell, ‘networking’ will not work for you.
It Takes A Village…
Have you heard the saying it takes a village to raise a child?
This can easily relate to your business as well.
Networking is actually about making meaningful connections and building relationships.
Interact and mingle with others. Do this with an open mind, an open ear, and an understanding
that you’re not there to make a sale or gain a client.
You are there to build relationships that will open doors and opportunities for you.
Allow people to become familiar with you – get connected (ideally through a warm intro) with people who might benefit from your strengths and skills.
Let the universe will do its thing, and you might be surprised by what you ultimately return from
simply making significant connections.
Stop Making Excuses!
Many people avoid networking because they’re not sure what they have to offer, or they are intimidated by their competitors.
Before you go to each event:
- Remind yourself about your why – why do you do what you do?
- Know that you are Unique and that is why your customers buy from you.
- Say a couple positive affirmations.
- And be ready to build some valuable relationships
If networking isn’t your favorite thing to do in the world – start small.
Sometimes, just showing up to a networking event can be an accomplishment. Challenge yourself to attend the event and grab a drink, and allow the conversations to come to you.
Know that you are probably not going to talk to every person in the room. Aim for quality over quantity every time, and alway try to connect with someone new.
Be open, let discussions go in whatever direction they go, and this will lead you to attract the right individuals and opportunities that will be the most advantageous to you in the long run.
If you follow these steps, you’ll find yourself enjoying networking in no time!
