Company policies for your business…
Think you’re too small to have and/or need them? Think again.
As a business owner, your company is most likely one of your largest assets, if not your largest and you want to protect it. This is where your policies can play an integral role.
So, what are company policies anyway?
Simply put, company policies are a set of rules defined by the owner or leadership of the company that help to protect both your business and your employees.
Policies and procedures help clarify and reinforce the standards expected of your employees and help set the tone for company culture and relieve leadership from the need to feel like they have to micromanage things.
Some polices are defined by state and federal regulations such as anti-discrimination rules and overtime pay and others are designed by the owner can range from dress code & cell phone use to safety & hiring policies to customer experience and delivery policies in order to ensure that things are done to a certain standard.
By having well-written and thought-out policies in place, you can avoid potential legal issues, maintain a happy and productive workforce, and keep your business running smoothly.
Because, without adequate and well-developed policies and procedures, there are no rules. And unfortunately, without defined rules, people create their own. And you don’t want your team members making decisions that don’t match up with what you want.
There are a variety of different types of policies that businesses should have in place, depending on the size and nature of the business. As previously mentioned, some are designed to prevent legal issues, while others are designed to build company image and culture.
Some common examples include:
● Health and safety policies
● Social media policies
● Drug and alcohol policies
● Equal opportunity and diversity policies
● Data protection and security policies
There are a number of good reasons to have company policies in place, even if you only have one or two employees.
Having policies in place can:
● Help to ensure that your employees are aware of your expectations and know what is expected of them
● Help to prevent or address issues such as harassment, discrimination, or inappropriate behavior in the workplace
● Protect your business from potential legal action by employees or other third parties
No matter your industry, every organization- no matter how small – needs policies and procedures to operate effectively and successfully.
And policies and procedures are not the same…
Policies provide guidance and clarity for employees, managers, and executives on how the company should operate. They also help protect the organization from legal risk.
Procedures, on the other hand, are the specific steps that need to be taken in order to comply with company policies.
When developing policies and procedures for your business, there are a few things to keep in mind:
● Policies should be clear, concise, and easy to understand.
● Policies should be regularly reviewed and updated as needed.
● All employees should be made aware of company policies and be able to access them easily.
● Procedures should be specific and clearly outlined.
If you don’t already have some in place, now is the time to start thinking about which ones would be most relevant and beneficial for your business.
Creating policies and procedures may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. There are a number of templates and resources available online that can help you get started.
