What Makes A Great Client Gift

Giving gifts to clients is a great way to build trust and show them you appreciate your professional relationship. However, many business owners struggle to find appropriate gifts for their clients. As an expert in small business consulting, I believe the right gift can cement a business-client relationship, setting the stage for future relationships.

With that in mind, here are some ideas on how to pick the perfect gift for your clients.

Finding the Right Client Gift

Finding the ideal client gift depends on the industry and specific relationship. That said, the best gifts tend to have the following common features.

Utility

Above all else, a great gift is a useful one. Giving clients gifts with no practical utility is a surefire way to make them lose interest. That excludes things like keychains, T-shirts, or stress balls. Instead, think of items they could use every day, like mouse pads or reusable bottles.

It also helps to think about client interests. Perhaps they enjoy cooking or hiking. Maybe they like tech gadgets and software.

Whatever the answer, try to think of something that they could feasibly use every day or every week. They’ll think about you and your relationship whenever they use your present.

Unique

Similarly, a unique gift is the best way to make an impression on clients. Too many companies fall into giving out stereotypical corporate gifts, like mugs, pens, or keychains.

One idea is to forgo traditional gifts and find something from a local retail spot. For example, handmade crafts are unique enough that clients will never confuse your gift with others.

Other non-traditional gift ideas are dedicating a nameplate at an important location to them or supporting one of their charitable causes.

The key is to get creative with gift ideas to find something that distinguishes you from others.

Personal

Generic gifts are boring and may not mesh with the intended recipient. Most people like gifts that appeal to them personally or take their personality and interests into account. Personalization doesn’t mean writing your client’s name all over the gift but requires a bit more subtlety.

Think about things your client likes, like their favorite colors or music they like. Perhaps you could get them tickets to a showing of their favorite play or give them a book from their favorite author.

Most of the time, clients will appreciate a thoughtful gift over an expensive one.

High-Quality

Lots of generic corporate gifts are poor quality and won’t last. The key to a good gift is finding something that will last a long time.

Client gifts should consist of high-quality materials and construction. In my experience with small business consulting, the last thing you want is to get a cheap gift that falls apart after a few months.

For example, a genuine leather wallet or silk scarf features luxurious, durable materials that make a great gift. High-quality gifts keep on giving because they last longer. When a client receives a gift, you want them to recognize you put in a lot of effort making a decision.

Finding the perfect gift for your clients is a great way to show your appreciation for their business and cement the relationship. However, it’s important to think about utility, uniqueness, personalization, and quality when selecting the ideal gift.
